Fort Sumter was a Union fort located on a island in South Carolina, by Charleston Harbor. It was held by the Northern Army and they needed to be resupplied, because they were running low on much needed supplies. South Carolina did not like that the Union would not resupply the Fort, nor let them resupply them. Though the Northern Army refused to let them be resupplied. The Confederates had had enough and shots were fired. Later having had been overrun the Union surrendered the fort. The Civil War had began. Later South Carolina seceded from the United States of America. Becoming the first state to secede.
This is Fort Sumter when it was up and running.
Important Person
General Robert Anderson lived in the south. Even though he lived in and loved the South he fought for the Union. This was because he did not believe in or agree with what the South was doing. So basically, he disagreed with slavery. Anderson was a kind and quiet man. He was married and had two kids. After his defeat at Fort Sumter he lowered the flag and put up the surrender flag. Over many other battles in the Civil War, he recaptured Fort Sumter and replaced the white flag with the United States flag. Anderson died on October 26, 1871 in Paris.
